Writing blogs for money is an activity that is appealing to some. For myself I had instant back-off the moment I contemplated having to write content on a daily basis, like clockwork, and with no chance to move on to some other project and leave the blog behind at some time.

Writing a blog, for money or otherwise, can be daunting for those of us who either just don’t have the time or the inclination to write regularly.

So what’s the answer for us if we shy away from the whole blogging rage yet we drool over the profit potential tied to blogging for money?

Here are some tips to get you started on the road to profitable blogging.

1. You must have a purpose and direction, as well as some reward point, in mind before     you start your blog. Ideally, if you’re going to blog with the intention of making money from it, use your blog to create a web presence for yourself (purpose). Choose a vehicle or a method by which you can monetize your blog. It could be that you put product ads on your site that you get commissions on when visitors click through and buy the product, or it could be something like a network marketing opportunity that you use your blog to funnel people into. It could be that you sell your own product on your blog, etc. Having the purpose will help with direction. Then you just need to decide on a reward goal such as a monetary amount that will act as a goal of achievement.

2. Writing blogs for money becomes very difficult unless you are familiar with SEO (search engine optimization). Fortunately, there is a lot of information out there on simple SEO. Used correctly you will be able to get many of your blog posts onto the first page of the major search engines and consequently get eyes on your blog. From there it will just be a case of time before you begin seeing money from your blogging efforts.

3. Use WordPress if you want to speed your effort to make money with your blog. WordPress is free and once learned (it’s not too difficult and there are many tutorials on how to set it up) you’ll have a profitable skill for life. Also, using WordPress for your blogging platform allows you access to the thousands of free applications (plugins) that are available to its bloggers.

4. If you can, buy a domain name that has your name in it. Doing this will allow you to brand yourself over time and your name will become synonymous with your market. If “yourname.com” is taken, don’t worry, there are alternatives. Try “your.name.com”, “yname.com, “jsdoe.com” (if your middle initial were S). You get the idea.
